Don’t Miss Festivals & Events in London: December (Non-Denominational) Edition

02 April 2019

It’s December and London is all abuzz with festivities celebrating the holidays! Well, this isn’t that list. We’ve done our research to find the best events and activities for the month that are decidedly NOT related to any denominational holiday. For the most part, our picks will keep you indoors and out of the chill – but you should really considering bundling up for one of the town’s most interesting festivals. Check out this month’s best-of for London.

The Impressionists in London (Now – 7 May 2018): As France was suffering during the Franco-Prussian War and insurrection in Paris, many artists crossed the English Channel to seek peace. These masters developed friendships in London that led to an exchange of influences and ideas that had a major impact on British art culture. The Impressionists in London at Tate Britain is the first exhibition of its kind to showcase these relationships. You’ll see works from Monet, Pissarro, and Sisley – and can even make a night of it with a French-inspired dinner.

Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring a Classic (9 Dec. 2017 – 8 Apr. 2018): The timeless appeal of this much adored bear is celebrated at the Victorian and Albert Museum, but the focus isn’t the story itself: This Winnie-the-Pooh exhibit highlights the relationship between the author and artist behind the sketches that brought the characters to life through his sketches and cartoons. The V&A is showcasing its own collection, which includes a hand-painted, Christopher Robin ceramic tea set presented to Queen Elizabeth in 1928.

Winterville (23 Nov. 2017 – 1 Jan. 2018): OK, there is a Christmas-y angle to Winterville in Clapton Common, but don’t expect Father Christmas, Scrooge, and candy canes at London’s Alternative Festive Experience. There are plenty of food options, including juicy ribs, Chinese bao, and wood-fired pizzas – and you can dance off all those calories at the fest’s roller disco. Or visit the Spiegeltent, which features as much Mexican wrestling, cabaret, musical bingo, and partying as you can handle.
